Test Your Face Covering Quality

A simple at home test of your face covering

The CDC states, “Masks with at least 2 layers of fabric are most likely to reduce the spread of COVID-19 when they are widely used by people in public settings.” Ref: Your Guide to Masks

Fabric face coverings that allow breath to be blown easily through the front may not be as effective at preventing community transmission of COVID-19. Fabric layers may be more important than the style of the face covering.

Example of How to Test Your Face Covering Fabric

blowing through 2-layer mask

Blowing through the CDC recommended two layers of fabric using the force of blowing out a candle does not easily allow the breath to reach the tissue. Breath stays closer to the user increasing benefits.

blowing through single layer mask

Blowing in the same manner through a single layer of stretchy polyester fabric allows the breath to freely move the tissue. Breath moves farther from the user reducing benefits.
