Using Cloth Face Coverings (Masks)
Understand the Role of Face Coverings
Masks (face coverings) offer some protection to you and are also meant to protect those around you, in case you are unknowingly infected with the virus that causes COVID-19.
You MUST still maintain a distance of at least 6 feet (about 2 arms' length) from other individuals, as much as possible.
How to Select and Wear Your Face Covering
For the best protection, it's important to wear your face covering correctly and consistently. The CDC provides more information on face covering types and their use in special situations.
Use two or more layers
Wear a face covering with two or more layers of washable, breathable fabric.
Cover nose and mouth
Wear your face covering to completely cover over your nose and mouth and secure it under your chin.
Fit snugly with no gaps
Wear a face covering that fits snugly against the sides of your face and don't have gaps.
Special situation: glasses
If you wear glasses, find a face covering that fits closely over your nose or one that has a nose wire to limit fogging.
Quick tip to check your face covering's protection: Fabric layers may be more effective than the style. Hold a facial/bathroom tissue out in front of you while wearing your face covering—an arms length away from your face—and blow air as if blowing out a candle. Fabric that allows air to be blown easily through the front may not be as effective at preventing community transmission of COVID-19.
