When to Wear Gloves on Campus

Regular Duties

You should continue to wear gloves for job duties that required gloves prior to the pandemic.

Activities that Require Gloves that Did Not Previously

If your job requires you to continually handle items (money, papers, etc.) directly from other people, you may choose to wear gloves during your shift with the following precautions to prevent cross-contamination:

  • Avoid unnecessary touching of items while wearing gloves.
  • Do not touch your face or your face covering while wearing gloves.
  • Perform hand hygiene after proper glove removal.
  • Properly dispose of used gloves; they cannot be reused.
  • Sanitize surfaces that were touched with the gloves.

When Gloves Are Not Needed

The CDC does not recommend wearing gloves while in public places for the prevention of COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself while in public spaces:

If you do wear gloves while in public areas, you must still avoid cross-contamination:

  • Do not touch your face or your face covering.
  • Avoid touching surfaces unnecessarily.
  • Properly dispose of used gloves in the regular trash; they cannot be reused.
  • Perform hand hygiene after proper glove removal:
    • Wash with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
